North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics - Morganton

Ian McMichael joined the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in August 2022 as the Athletics Director on the Morganton campus. Since his arrival, McMichael has led the launch and growth of the school’s athletics program, expanding offerings to 18 varsity sports. Under his leadership, the Dragons have captured two State Championships (Women’s Cross Country and Women’s Tennis), two Regional Finalist finishes (Men’s Tennis and Men’s Soccer), seven conference championships, and three individual State Championships. The program has also established a culture rooted in sportsmanship, highlighted by three consecutive years of ejection-free competition across all programs.

Jonathan Browning joined NCSSM in August 2023 as the Instructor of Physical Activity and Wellness and Intramural Coordinator for the Morganton campus. Prior to coming to NCSSM, Jonathan taught health and physical education in Burke County Public Schools for over 23 years. During that time, he also coached baseball, basketball, and football at both the middle and high school levels. Coach Browning currently serves as the Men’s and Women’s Head Golf Coach and assists with game-day operations for home contests. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, participating in outdoor recreation activities, and working on his family farm.
